
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
A unique address assigned to each object on the web, otherwise known as your address on the web e.g. http://www.domain.com
Domain / Domain Name
The portion of a URL, following "http://www." that is specifically registered to you e.g. yourname.com, yourname.org, yourname.net, etc.
HTML (HyperText Markup Language)
The language with which web pages are written and designed.
ISP (Internet Service Provider)
The company you use to connect your computer to the Internet, which enables you to view web pages, send & receive e-mail, etc.
PP (Presence Provider)
The company that hosts your actual web site. They store your files on their servers so that the world has access to your web site.
Browser
The window in which you surf the web, either by typing in a URL or selecting a web site from your bookmarked sites (favorite places for AOL users). The window in which you are viewing this page right now is your browser. Some examples of browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape. AOL has its own browser.
Internal Link
A link which links to another page within your site.
External Link
A link which links to a web site outside of your site.
E-mail Link
A link which will automatically generate a blank e-mail for visitors, pre-addressed to an e-mail address you specify.
Meta Tag Coding / Search Engine Submission
This is necessary so that people searching the Internet, through the use of search engines, can find your web site by entering key words. Proper Meta Tag coding ensures that search engines can quickly find your site and spider your pages.
Hit Counter
Service which keeps track of the number of times your page has been "hit" by visitors, either directly through your site or by sites that are linked to yours. (This statistic is not to be confused with unique visitors.) The hit counter is a small graphical box which is displayed on the page in which it is keeping track of, and displays the number of hits.
E-Tracker
Service which keeps track of very detailed information about the visitors of your site, including Unique Visitors (displays number of visitors, categorized by day, week, month, hours of the day, days of the week), Geo Tracking (displays number of visitors, categorized by domain, country, continent), System Tracking (displays number of visitors, categorized by browsers, operating systems, screen resolutions, screen colors), Referral Tracking 1 (displays how visitors got to your site, categorized by e-mail referrals, web site referrals, and search engine referrals), Referral Tracking 2 (displays more detailed information about Referral Tracking 1, categorized by search engine queries, keywords used, etc.). A small graphical image is displayed on the page in which it is keeping track of.
